Story:

Rankin, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department On Saturday, February 8, 2014, the Rankin Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program to assist the agency’s search for a 12 year old boy who had gone missing the previous evening and concern for his safety was growing. He had last been seen in the 100 block of Monroeville Avenue in Turtle Creek and more than 1,200 telephone alert calls were placed around the area where he was last seen, giving his physical description, the clothing he was last seen wearing and asking anyone with information to contact Police. Within minutes, telephones in the boy’s neighborhood were ringing, and Police received many calls from the public with information and the boy; knowing about the alert calls searching for him, prompted him to return home on his own accord. Per case follow-up received, “The missing child returned home the following day on his own! We believe the Alert went out and the child was forced to return home the next morning. Thank you!” wrote Chief Ryan D. Wooten.

Story:

Hampton Township, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department On Sunday, January 12, 2014, a 16 year old girl went missing from her residence in Allison Park due to anxiety over an upcoming court appearance scheduled for the next day. The child was also upset because her mother had taken away her cell phone, so she went for a walk to cool off but hadn’t returned. Sergeant Vulakovich activated A Child Is Missing alert and more than 1,700 telephone alert calls were placed with the girl’s physical description, the clothing she was last seen wearing, and asking anyone with information or who had seen her to contact Police. In response, multiple calls came in from residents and a tip finally came in that placed the girl with a friend. It is believed the missing girl was visiting a friend and they received the alert call and the parent realizing she was at their house, reported it to Police. Police responded and found the girl safe, 2.5 miles from where she had gone missing.

Sandy Township, Pennsylvania (Clearfield County) Police Department Sunday, November 10, 2013, a 16 year old boy went missing from Du Bois, Pennsylvania and Officer Johnson called A Child Is Missing to activate the alert. Within minutes, telephones in the boy’s neighborhood were ringing, giving the boys description and asking anyone with information to call Police. In response, Police received 6 tips from residents. These tips assisted them in locating the boy in a neighboring town about 20 miles away.

Canonsburg Boro, Pennsylvania Police Department (Washington County) Tuesday, August 6, 2013, a 9 year old boy went outside to take out the trash at night and did not come back. Detective Coghill began a search which included activating A Child Is Missing Alert. The boy had gone missing around 11pm so due to the late hour A Child Is Missing about 400 alerts to the immediate area around the boy’s home. Many residents came out to participate in the search and 1 credible tip with a sighting was received. The boy was located at about 2:15am, safe in an area about 7 miles away.

These tips assisted Police in locating the boy at a playground about 3 miles away from his home.

Gallitzin Borough, Pennsylvania Police Department (Cambria County) Friday, May 24, 2013, an 11 year old boy described to be mentally impaired was reported missing from his home in Gallitzin. Sergeant H. Reger activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency’s search. Nearly 600 telephone alert calls were sent to residents and businesses around the boy’s home. According to the case follow-up: “The juvenile was located in a residence about a ¼ mile from his residence. The individual in whose residence the juvenile was heard it from a neighbor, who received a call from A Child Is Missing.”

Elizabeth Borough, Pennsylvania Police Department (Allegheny County) After A Child Is Missing placed more than 650 alert calls in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, “several residents, after receiving calls went out and looked for the missing child,” Patrolman Makosey said. This came after the Elizabeth Borough Police activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program on February 9, 2013 to assist the agency’s search for an eight year old boy who had gone missing at 2:30pm that day. As a result of the calls to Police, and people helping in the search generated by A Child Is Missing, the boy was located safe at approximately 5:50pm.

Aliquippa, Pennsylvania Police Department (Beaver County) The morning of Friday, January 11, 2013, Assistant Chief Dan Couch called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert. A 26 year old man reported to have mental difficulties as well as autism had been missing from his residence for several hours. Upon activation, over 1,500 telephone alert calls were sent to the area surrounding the man’s home. A woman that received the alert looked outside and saw a man matching the description. She notified Police, who responded and located the missing person, safe, although he was cold and tired. Total time from activation to safe recovery was approximately 30 minutes.

The girls had not been seen in over a day when they had been picked up from a relative’s home in a vehicle. Upon activation, A Child Is Missing placed over 1,400 telephone alert calls which helped Police to locate the girls safe approximately 14 miles away.

Some parents that lived in the area received the alert call and contacted their own children. Eventually, a child that was with the missing girl received a call from a parent that received the alert and the girl was driven home.

They noticed the male in their woods when they arrived home and then received the broadcast call. The elderly male was located and transported to the hospital to be evaluated.” This was written by Sergeant Lott after he activated A Child Is Missing Alert the evening of January 28, 2012 in an effort to locate a 78 year old man suffering from dementia and pneumonia. Temperatures were near freezing and the medications the man was taking made him prone to hallucinations. Almost 700 telephone alert calls were sent to the area surrounding the man’s home. Total time from activation to safe recovery was less than 40 minutes.

Rankin, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department It was nearing 4pm on Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 when a toddler wearing dinosaur pajamas was found wandering near Palisades Manor in Rankin. Officer Rocco responded to discover where the boy belonged. To assist, he activated A Child Is Missing Alert which placed over 500 telephone calls to the surrounding area. The alert gave the boy’s general description and asked anyone who might know the boy to contact Police. In response, one tip came in. That tip helped Police to locate the boy’s home, approximately 20 feet from where he was located. This success marked Rankin Police Department’s Fourth Safe Assisted Recovery since September, 2010, giving the agency a 100% success rate.

Officers Ford and Thrower began searching for the boy and discovered that due to a miscommunication, he had gotten on a school bus. However, that school bus had already dropped all of the children off and was now empty. Officer Ford activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist and more than 1,800 telephone alert calls were placed surrounding both the boy’s home and the bus route. In response, a tip finally came in that placed the boy with a friend of the family. Police responded and found the boy unharmed. “This is the third time my police department has used your system and the third time it was successful,” wrote Chief Wooten.

North Huntingdon Township, Pennsylvania (Westmoreland County) Police Department The morning of Sunday, June 5, 2011, an 81 year old man suffering from dementia was reported missing to The North Huntingdon Township Police Department. The man had had last been seen the previous afternoon when he left home to get the air conditioning fixed in his station wagon. Lieutenant Mahinske led the search and activated A Child Is Missing Alert as part of his agency’s efforts. Nearly 1,000 telephone alert calls were placed surrounding the man’s home asking anyone with information to contact Police. In response, 4 tips were received. According to the case follow-up received, “the alert phone calls triggered the individuals that called to remember various sounds and events they experienced when the man was missing, which led to him being located very close to his residence.” Ultimately, the man was found inside his vehicle which he had driven over a hillside in a wooded area beside his residence. Total time from activation to recovery was less than one hour.

Penn Hills Borough, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department During the evening on Saturday, January 22, 2011 a deaf and mute adult with Down Syndrome, with a history of wandering off, went missing from his home. To make matters worse, the temperature was in the teens and the man was not wearing a coat. After an unsuccessful search of a small wooded area near his house, police contacted A Child Is Missing Alert to aid in the effort. Nearly 1,200 calls were launched in the vicinity around the house. In response, several callers reported seeing the man in a shopping center in town approximately a mile away from his home. With this information, police were able to launch a focused search, and the man was found safe in that Shopping Center and returned to his family.

Rankin, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department The afternoon of Wednesday, September 29, 2010, Lieutenant Sion activated A Child Is Missing Alert for the first time after attending a training a few weeks prior. He was leading the search for a missing 28 year old woman with previous psychiatric problems that had been missing for several hours. Her mother reported her missing and was concerned because the woman seemed depressed and her residence was within walking distance to the large Monongahela River. Nearly 1,000 alert calls were placed surrounding the woman’s home and Police received several calls with information as a result. Some of those callers reported a woman matching her description getting onto a bus. Police were then able to obtain the video of the woman from the bus and discovered the woman got off the bus at a psychiatric facility. Because of HIPPA laws, the hospital would not confirm or deny the woman’s presence at the facility but finally the woman did contact a sister who confirmed the woman’s safety at the hospital.

Rankin, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department Wednesday, September 1, 2010, a 2 year old girl was found wandering alone wearing a pink shirt and diaper. Chief Wooten had received an invitation to an upcoming training for A Child Is Missing Alert and decided to utilize the service. He dialed the toll free number, provided key information to the technician, and, shortly after, the area was ringing with calls requesting anyone with information to contact Police. To one resident, the description of the girl sounded familiar, and she phoned the mother of the child, who in turn contacted Police when she discovered her daughter missing. First time use, first success. The agency will have a firsthand testimony to share during the training, and best of all, a family is reunited safe.

Story:

Mifflin County, Pennsylvania Regional Police Department On Saturday, April 10, 2010, Sergeant French activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency’s search for a missing 9 year old boy. The boy had grabbed his rollerblades at approximately 4:30pm that day and when he did not come home well after dark; his parents grew worried and began searching the neighborhood. They could not find him, and finally called Police. Because of the delay in Police being notified, Sergeant French made a choice to launch the alert calls in spite of it being nearly midnight. Over 3,000 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the Lewistown address where the boy had last been seen. In response to the alert calls, Police received several calls with information. One of those calls went to a neighbor where the boy happened to be playing with some other children his age. Ultimately, the boy was located safe, less than one tenth of a mile from where he had gone missing. The total time from activation of the alert calls to the child being located was less than 35 minutes, thus preserving law enforcement time and resources.

More than 1,400 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the woman had last been seen. After receiving several calls from people who had received an alert call, at 7:47am Police safely located the woman less than a mile from where she had gone missing.

Mifflin County, Pennsylvania Regional Police Department A 13 year old girl thought to possible be in need of medical attention went missing from the 100 block of West 4th Street in Lewiston, Pennsylvania on October 15, 2009 at approximately 6:35pm. As Mifflin County Regional Police were searching, they were fully aware the girl had recently moved into the area. This provided little information as to where she may have gone and Police activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. After more than 1,200 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where she had last been seen, 14 calls with information were placed to Police. Based on information from those calls, Police located the girl safe at 8:00pm two miles from where she had gone missing.

Munhall, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department After activating the A Child Is Missing Alert Program on September 24, 2009 to help search for the parents of a three year old boy who had been found, Munhall, Pennsylvania Police Officer Daniel Boehme wrote: “Your program worked better than we could have hoped. Within seconds of receiving your call that the [alert] calls were being placed, we started getting calls to our station. These calls gave us several leads as to where the child may have come from and gave us some locations to look where the child may have lived. The calls made by [A Child Is Missing] also reached many of our residents that are members of our block watch, who then started using the [pre-established] phone chains. We were also stopped by many people who went outside to look around at homes where children matching that description lived. Due to your program, we were able to conclude this incident when a neighbor to the child received the call and woke up the child’s parents. We would like to thank you so much for your assistance in resolving this incident.”

Northern Regional, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department On August 11, 2009, a cognitively impaired 51 year old man went missing from the 3500 block of West Stag Road in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania and the Northern Regional Police Department was searching for him. The man had gone missing in the past, but had always returned within a few hours. On this occasion, he had been missing for three days. To assist the search, Police activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program and 1,900 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the man had last been seen. While Police received approximately 25 calls from people with information, one of those came from an employee at the Route 8 Lodge in Hampton Township, Pennsylvania. The employee had received the alert call and, approximately two hours later, the missing man walked into the lodge. Recognizing him from the alert call description, the employee called Police who located the man safe—ending the three day search.

Carlisle, Pennsylvania (Cumberland County) Police Department When a non-custodial father abducted his two children in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Police there quickly attempted to find the children and the man. The three had last been seen in the area of Noble Boulevard in Carlisle and were thought to be in a vehicle. This occurred on the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2009 and Police activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program soon after. More than 2,300 alert calls were placed to the area where the children had last been seen. As a result, Police received six calls from the community providing information about the missing people. One of those was from a woman who reported having seen the vehicle in question at a theatre in Carlisle. When Police responded, they safely located the children and the man.

Gallitzin Borough, Pennsylvania (Cambria County) Police Department “Awesome program,” said Gallitzin Borough, Pennsylvania Police Chief Gerald Hagan of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. “A great tool for law enforcement in the recovery of missing kids,” he said. The Alert Program was responsible for assisting Gallitzin Police in their recovery of a missing 15 year old girl on June 15, 2009. She had last been seen near the 1000 block of Hemlock Street in Gallitzin and was located safe shortly after midnight by Police in the 6800 block of Admiral Peary Highway in Munster Township—some seven miles away.

Northern Regional, Pennsylvania (Allegheny County) Police Department On Thursday, May 21, 2009 a 15 year old boy went missing from the Grandview Estates housing plan in Gibsonia, Pennsylvania at approximately 3:30pm. The Northern Regional Police Department began its search which included activating the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. After nearly 1,700 alert calls were placed to the area of Grandview Estates, Northern Regional Police received approximately 20 calls from the public with information. Information from these calls enabled Northern Regional Police to safely locate the boy in the 5600 block of William Flynn Highway approximately one mile from where he had last been seen.

When an 83 year old man in need of medical attention went missing on May 12, 2009 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State Police began searching for him. He had last been seen at approximately 3:00pm in the area of 300 Turkey Farm Road in Irwin, Pennsylvania. The North Huntingdon Township Police, assisting the State Police, called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program. After more than 4,600 alert calls were placed surrounding the area where the man had last been seen, four calls with information were received by Police. Two of those calls were instrumental in Police locating the man at Bill and Ray’s Bar approximately two miles from where he had gone missing.

At 11:00am on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, a boy went missing from Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania just outside of Pittsburgh. The last sighting of him had been in the 400 block of Old Clairton Road in Pittsburgh and Pleasant Hills Police began their search. That search included the activation of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. The “first call was received [by Police] within 20 minutes of notifying ACIM,” said Pleasant Hills Police Detective Bryan Frankenfield. One of the 13 calls received by police led directly to the boy’s safe recovery—at Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, some 400 miles away.

When an 18 year old boy went missing from the 1600 block of Church Street in Ambridge, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of Monday, March 2, 2009, Officer Bismuke of the Ambridge Police Department called A Child Is Missing. Telephone alert calls were placed to the areas of the 1600 block of Church Street in Ambridge and the intersection of Beaver and Cross Streets in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania—another area in question in the boy’s disappearance. Ambridge Police received single call with information in response to the alert calls and that led them to the missing boy ¾ mile from where he had last been seen.

Collier Township, PA (Allegheny County) - “The bottom line is that the A Child Is Missing service was directly responsible for helping police locate this subject before he was harmed,” said Collier Township, Pennsylvania Police Patrolman Rick Lamb. This after an 80 year old man had gone missing at 8:15am on Wednesday, March 5, 2008. In a case which involved neighboring law enforcement agencies and K-9 units, A Child Is Missing launched more than 2,000 alert phone calls in the area of the 400 block of Stafford Avenue in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. Of the three calls generated by the alert calls, one led Police directly to the man who was disoriented and suffering from hypothermic.

In Coraopolis, Pennsylvania just outside of Pittsburgh, a 16 year old girl was missing on January 26, 2008 and the Coraopolis Borough Police Department began a search which included use of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. Alert calls were placed to the area adjacent to the 600 block of 7th Avenue in Coraopolis and the 1300 block of Boundary Street in nearby Aliquippa, Pennsylvania. After more than 2,600 alert calls were launched to the community, 52 calls with information were received by Police. One of these calls came from the house in which the girl was located—a relatives house whom the girl was visiting.

Coraopolis, PA (Allegheny County) – On the evening of December 12, 2006, Sgt. Smith of the Moon Township Police Department called A Child Is Missing to request assistance with the search for a 10 year old boy who had gone missing from his home. Within minutes the ACIM technician mapped the area around which the child had gone missing and launched over one thousand calls to residents and businesses in the area. Approximately 25 calls were received by the Moon Township Police Department which resulted in the save recovery of the missing boy. Sgt. Smith reported, “A child who goes to school with the missing child overheard him say where he was going to go. Found the missing child within 1 hour of putting out alert. The child was located at a friend’s house.”
