Harford County, Maryland Police Department When a 12 year old girl thought to be in need of medical assistance went missing in Abingdon on February 23, 2010, Corporal Gonzales activated A Child Is Missing Alert. More than 1,900 alert calls were placed to the neighborhood surrounding the 2900 block of Salford Drive, where the girl had last been seen. In response to the alert calls, Police received 12 calls from the public with information, ultimately leading to the girl’s safe recovery 2 miles from where she had gone missing.

Maryland State Police Department “Great job, thanks for your help,” said Maryland State Police Corporal John Revel after A Child Is Missing helped his agency located a missing 64 year old man in need of medical attention. Canine patrols and a helicopter were already searching for the man, but it was information from one of the six calls Police received from the alert calls placed in the area that led them to the man’s whereabouts. This occurred in the 5000 block of Sailfish Drive in Eden, Maryland on Monday, January 4, 2010. The man had last been seen at 9:38am, alert calls were placed at 1:47pm, and the man was safely located at 6:15 the following morning.

Anne Arundel County, Maryland Police Department When an 84 year old woman in need of medical attention went missing from the 8500 block of Jenkins Road in Pasadena, Maryland at 1:00am on November 24, 2009, the Anne Arundel County, Maryland Police Department called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program to assist the search. More than 1,100 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the woman was last seen. One hour and 11 minutes later Police located the woman safe as a result of the alert calls. She was found in the 8400 block of Fort Smallwood Road in Baltimore, Maryland approximately 2/10 mile from where she had gone missing.

Bel Air, Maryland (Harford County) Police Department When the Bel Air, Maryland Police Department was presented with an elderly woman who had been found near the 200 block of Canterbury Road in Bel Air on August 5, 2009, Deputy Chief Armand Dupre was charged with locating the woman’s family. Deputy Chief Dupre quickly called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program seeking anyone with knowledge of the woman’s family. The case was complicated by virtue of Bel Air Police having no way of knowing the woman’s name. Based on her description, Police received eight phone calls from the public with information. One of those calls was from the woman’s husband who had received the alert call and recognized his wife from the description. The woman’s family responded to Police and was reunited with her.

Federalsburg, Maryland (Caroline County) Police Department “Without the use of the call back system, who knows how long it would have taken,” said Federalsburg, Maryland Police Detective Pennell Jester. This came after the Federalsburg Police Department activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program to assist the search for the parents of a three year old boy who had been found in the area of Morris Avenue and Park Lane in Federalsburg at 10:00am on August 5, 2009. Without knowing the last name of the child, Police began the search which included more than 900 alert phone calls placed by A Child Is Missing. “It was a wonderful tool in assisting us in locating and returning a child to [his] family,” said Detective Jester, “from the time the call back started till the time we reunited the child with his parents was approximately 45 minutes.”

When a 10 year old boy went missing from the 200 block of Woodson School Road in Crisfield, Maryland at 3:30pm on Thursday, May 7, 2009, Crisfield Police called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program to assist their search. More than 2,000 alert calls were placed to residences and businesses in the area surrounding where the boy had last been seen. These alert calls resulted in some 200 calls to Crisfield Police by alert citizens with information. Ultimately the boy was safely reunited with his family when he was seen walking along the 200 block of North Somerset Avenue by someone who had received an alert call from A Child Is Missing.

Ten calls with information regarding a missing 11 year old boy thought to possibly be in need of medical attention were received by the Baltimore County, Maryland Police Department shortly after A Child Is Missing placed more than 1,300 alert phone calls on the agency’s behalf. One of those calls to Police was from a resident who, after receiving the alert call, checked their yard and found the boy’s backpack. After the boy had gone missing on the afternoon of May 4, 2009, this information enabled Baltimore County Police to pinpoint the boy’s location and locate him shortly after on Sinclair Lane in Baltimore City—some 2 ½ miles from where he had last been seen.

Hughesville, MD (Charles County) - In a rural area in Charles County, Maryland, Sergeant Carlson of the Charles County Sheriff’s Office called A Child Is Missing to activate an alert regarding a missing elderly woman. On January 21, 2008, the woman had wandered out of her house in 13 degree weather after her husband went to sleep shortly after 10:00pm. Due to the rural nature of the area, upon mapping this location, only 28 alert calls were placed. This resulted in one call to the Sheriff’s Office—which led deputies to the missing woman. She was safely recovered and reunited with her husband at home.

Westminster, MD (Carroll County) - Maryland Sheriff’s Office - According to Carroll County, Maryland Sheriff’s Deputy Holland, “residents were able to successfully inform my dispatch center with the location of the juvenile within 30 minutes.” This after Deputy Holland had activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program at 3:25pm on November 17, 2007 in search of a 17 year old boy who had been missing since 6:00 that morning. After nearly 3,500 alert calls were launched in Sykesville, Maryland, the Sheriff’s Office received more than 30 calls from alert citizens. Ultimately the boy was located two miles from where he had last been seen.

Owings Mills, MD (Baltimore) - A Child Is Missing was contacted on September 5, 2007 at 5:00 p.m. by Officer Swartzendruber of the Baltimore County Police Department to report a missing person in need of medical assistance. After determining his description and last known whereabouts, among other pertinent information that might prove helpful in the recovery effort, a technician at ACIM launched over 1200 Alert Calls to area businesses and homes of where he was last seen. One of three leads received led to the successful recovery of the individual when a Target employee saw him hiding in the corner of his store and reported it to the 911 Call Center.

Owings Mills, MD (Baltimore) – When A Child Is Missing technician Kari Jimenez answered the phone just after 6:00pm on June 13, 2007, it was Officer Daugherty of the Baltimore County, Maryland Police Department on the other end of the line. A 75 year old man with Alzheimer’s had gone missing three hours earlier and Daugherty was seeking help from the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. Jimenez quickly mapped the Owings Mills area where the man had last been seen and launched more than 3,300 alert calls there. Approximately 25 calls were received by Baltimore County PD in response to the alert calls. One of those 25 calls led officers directly to the missing man.

Knoxville, MD (Frederick County) – A 13 year old boy was reported missing from his home on April 28, 2007 at approximately 2 AM. The Brunswick Police Department utilized the A Child Is Missing (ACIM) Alert Program to help located the missing child. The ACIM Technician on-call took all vital information from Officer Stafford and placed approximately 700 calls out to the neighborhood. The child was located shortly after the calls were placed. According to Officer Stafford, “He was located at a friend’s house. The mother of the friend received the Alert call and notified his parents.”

Office Ziggler reported, a 40-year-old disabled man was missing and they required assistance. According to Officer Ziggler, “Two callers gave information on the location of this missing person. The individual was located at a nearby car dealership. The “A Child Is Missing” program was essential in the recovery of the missing subject.”

Upon taking the report, the Officer Shaffer called the toll free number for the A Child Is Missing alert program, provided key information to the technician, and, shortly after, the region where he was last seen area was ringing with calls requesting those in the area to check their yards and complexes for the missing man. Police received numerous calls including one from a neighbor who stated that he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the police followed up and identified him there approximately two and a half hours after the man was reported missing.

Catonsville, MD (Baltimore County) – A ten-year-old boy was reported missing in the early evening of March 8 2006. Following procedure, Officer Owings of the Baltimore County Police Department went to the child’s home for further investigation. Upon arrival, he spoke with the father who told him that the family had been in an argument about school, resulting in the son leaving a note detailing that the boy had run away about a half hour before the police had been called. Officer Owings then contacted A Child Is Missing, who took the child’s description and the other details regarding a neighborhood alert. ACIM contacted over 1700 phones within a mile of the missing child’s address. Additionally, many police units conducted a large search in an effort to find the juvenile. The Baltimore County Police received approximately 25 calls from citizens of Catonsville directing the search to a nearby road where a boy meeting the description sent out had been seen. The missing child was found shortly thereafter, and was back at home with his family within 2 hours of the alert calls being distributed across the region. Officer Owings was quoted as saying “This Program Helped us find this juvenile with the help of residents in the surrounding area. I feel it is a great program and should be utilized whenever possible”.
