Story:

Muncie, Indiana (Delaware County) Police Department Tuesday, August 31, 2010, a 9 year old girl was reported missing to the Muncie Police Department. The girl was last seen on her bicycle earlier that evening. Her parents were concerned because it was beginning to grow dark and she had not returned home. The girl suffers from Asperger's syndrome and had been known to ride her bike long distances in the past, so Officer Ramsey contacted A Child Is Missing Alert and 2,700 alert calls were placed around the girl’s residence giving her description and a description of her bicycle. In response, a tip was received placing the girl approximately 3 miles west of her home. Officer Ramsey again called A Child Is Missing Alert and requested additional calls be placed around the area where the tip was received. An additional 1,900 calls were placed, and a woman who received that call was out on her front porch, spotted the girl riding in front of her home, phoned Police and held her until they arrived. Ultimately the girl was found safe, after having ridden 4 miles from her home, and reunited with her family.

Knox, Indiana (Starke County) Police Department Saturday, August 7, 2010, the Knox Police Department was searching for a 24 year old insulin dependent woman that had been missing for several hours. Police were also concerned because the woman was reported to be upset due to family issues and had not taken her daily insulin injections. More than 2,500 alert calls were placed surrounding the Locust Drive address where the woman was last seen. In response Police received two tips with information that enabled them to locate the woman. Ultimately, the woman was found safe, approximately 5 miles from where she had gone missing.

Peru, Indiana (Miami County) Police Department On Wednesday, July 7, 2010, Officer Lloyd activated the A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency in searching for two missing teen girls that had run away from their foster home. More than 2,500 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the Spring Street address where the two girls had last been seen. In response, 5 calls from residents with information were received. One of those calls was an employee at a local gas station that had seen the girls and called Police and gave the girl’s location. Ultimately, the girls were located safe, 1.3 miles from where they had gone missing.

Miami County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office On the afternoon of June 14, 2010, an 11 year old boy went missing after getting into an altercation with his mother. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office performed a search of the area which was not successful, and Detective Rogers activated A Child Is Missing to assist. More than 3,000 alert calls were placed to the 1100 Block of Barksdale Avenue, where the boy was last seen. Detective Rogers reported, “After A Child Is Missing Alert was initiated, the child was spotted in a housing area by a citizen. The child was located within minutes and returned safely.”

Lawrence County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office After interviewing friends and classmates, and searching all obvious areas, Captain Hettle contacted A Child Is Missing on Friday, May 7, to activate the alert in an effort to assist the department in a search for two 14 year olds that had run away the previous evening. More than 2,500 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the Sunny Acres Drive address where they had last been seen. In response, verbatim from the case follow-up report: “The first call was received 1 minute after the alert. The next 8 occurred within the first 10 minutes. We located and secured the two 14 year old runaways within 22 minutes of the alert. You were of great service.”

Story:

Vanderburgh County, Indiana Sheriff’s Office - Lieutenant Daza contacted A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program on March 13, 2010 in search of a missing six year old boy. More than 600 alert calls were placed to the 8000 block of Hazel Court, where the boy had last been seen earlier that morning in Evansville. One of those alert calls went directly to a neighbor of the boy, where he happened to be playing. The neighbor was unaware that the child had been reported missing. Once he received the alert call, he called Police and returned the child to his family. Ultimately, the boy was located safe, less than one mile from where he had gone missing, and less than 30 minutes from the time the calls launched, thus preserving law enforcement time and resources.

Muncie, Indiana (Delaware County) Police Department On January 25, 2010, the Muncie Police contacted the A Child is Missing Alert to assist in their agency’s search for two missing brothers, aged five and seven. Over 7,000 alert calls describing the two boys were placed to the area surrounding the 2900 block of Franklin Street, where they had last been seen. This generated three calls from residents who had seen the boys and Police found them safe at Wal-Mart, approximately one mile from where they had gone missing.

Miami County, Indiana Central Police Dispatch After more than 500 alert calls were placed in Miami County, Indiana on September 15, 2009, Miami County Central Dispatch received 15 calls from the public with information. According to a dispatcher, “the calls we received helped us narrow down the area where the subject was likely to be.” The subject was a 19 year old boy who had gone missing at approximately 6:30pm that day. After being notified by Miami County Central Dispatch later that evening, A Child Is Missing placed the alert calls and the boy was located at midnight on September 15th. Having gone missing from the 10500 block of South Poplar Street in Miami, Indiana, he was found approximately three miles away on Elm Street in Bunker Hill, Indiana.

Indianapolis, Indiana (Marion County) Metropolitan Police Department A 10 year old boy in need of medical attention went missing from the 4800 block of Nowland Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana 7:00am on August 7, 2009. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Detective Dan Kistner called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program to assist his agency’s search for the boy. As a result, more than 3,700 alert calls were placed within minutes to the area surrounding where the boy had last been seen. One recipient of the alert call contacted Police and said they had been notified of the missing boy by the A Child Is Missing alert call, and had seen the boy. Providing the location to Police, the boy was safely located approximately two miles from where he had gone missing.

Elkhart, Indiana (Elkhart County) Police Department A 13 year old girl went missing in Elkhart, Indiana and Police there activated the Alert Program of A Child Is Missing to assist their search. The girl had last been seen on July 16, 2009 at 1:30pm and was ultimately located safe as a direct result of the alert calls. She was seen in the 100 block of West Cleveland Street in Elkhart and, 3,700 alert phone calls later, was located safe. “Very helpful,” an Elkhart, Indiana Police spokesman said, “a lady received a [alert] phone call from the call service [A Child Is Missing], then she called Police which led us to the missing child.”

Elwood, Indiana (Madison County) Police Department When a four year old boy went missing at 1:30pm on July 15, 2009 in Elwood, Indiana wearing a grey wind breaker and Spiderman shoes, the Elwood Police began a search for him. He had last been seen in the 800 block of North 12th street in Elwood and A Child Is Missing, at the request of Elwood Police, placed alert calls in that area. After nearly 2,800 alert calls were placed requesting information about the boy, the Police Department received 12 calls from the public. Information from those calls resulted in Police locating the boy safe approximately one mile from where he had last been seen.

Gas City, Indiana (Grant County) Police Department “Thanks so much for such a wonderful program,” said Gas City, Indiana Police Dispatcher Kerri Colvin of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. This came after the Alert Program was activated by Gas City Police who were searching for a seven year old boy who had gone missing on June 9, 2009 at 11:00am. Because Police were unsure of whether or not the boy had boarded a bus, the search area was large and the Alert Program particularly helpful as a result. With more than 5,000 alert calls placed to the areas in question, more than 30 calls with information were generated from the public. This information enabled police to locate the boy safe. He was found just before 1:00pm on Creekside Drive approximately 2 ½ miles from where he had gone missing.

“We recently signed up with your service and had a training session on it June 2, 2009,” said Alexandria, Indiana Chief of Police Brian Burnett. “On June 3, 2009, one day after the training,” he said, “we were able to utilize the Alert system.” Chief Burnett continued: “We had a juvenile female that was reported as missing that morning and was last seen the night before. We activated A Child Is Missing and, within 15 minutes, were receiving phone calls. Some of the calls we were getting were that of concern and wanting more information… and some were calls of praise stating that they thought this was one of the best programs they heard of in a long time. We even had a couple of retirees state that they were just at home not doing anything and they went out and drove around in an effort to assist with the search. We received about 15 phone calls that day, one of which led us to the house that the juvenile was at. It turned out that she ran away from home the night prior and was hiding with a friend. Because of the calls made by A Child Is Missing, we were able to recover the juvenile within about four hours of the initial call and found her safe and sound.”

In Lafayette Indiana an eight year old boy had gone missing and, “information had been developed during the investigation that raised sincere concern the missing boy’s mother may have come from another state and taken her son, who she hadn’t seen in years,” wrote Lafayette Police Detective Sergeant Scott McCoy in a report following the case. Lafayette Police Detective Devine activated the A Child Is Missing (ACIM) Alert Program regarding this case on May 16, 2009. The boy had last been seen in the area of Altamonte Court in Lafayette at approximately 4:30pm that day. When 1,400 alert phone calls were placed by A Child Is Missing, the innocent nature of the situation was revealed. Due to heavy rain, the boy stayed at someone’s house without telling his father. “The family who was housing the child sent him walking home after receiving the ACIM phone call,” Scott said. On his walk home, Lafayette Police Officers who had been canvassing the area saw him and returned him safely to his father.

After activating the A Child Is Missing Alert Program regarding a 54 year old man in need of medical attention, the Muncie Indiana Police Department received 75-100 calls with information from the public in response to the 2,800 alert phone calls placed by A Child Is Missing. The man had last been seen in the 1700 block of West 16th Street in Muncie on Sunday, May 3, 2009. Muncie Police activated the Alert Program the next day as they followed information that the man may be headed to the cemetery where his recently deceased brother was buried. The man was located in the early afternoon of Tuesday, May 5th ¼ mile from where he had gone missing.

The Valparaiso, Indiana Police Department called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program to assist their search for a 77 year old man in need of medical attention who had gone missing on May 1, 2009. He had last been seen in the area of the 1600 block of Calumet Avenue in Valparaiso at approximately 2:55pm that day. More than 5,500 alert phone calls were placed to the area surrounding that address. At approximately 6:15pm a Valparaiso Police Lieutenant called A Child Is Missing to inform a Recovery Specialist that a phone call generated by the alert calls had been received by Police and reported a sighting of the missing man. That information pinpointed an area on which the fire department focused and found the man.

The man had last been seen at 1:30pm on Thursday, April 16, 2009 in the 10000 block of Golden Harbest Way in Indianapolis. Indianapolis Police Detective Shue activated the Alert Program which placed 2,000 alert calls to the area surrounding where the man had last been seen. Ultimately the man was safely reunited with his family.

When a one year old girl went missing in the company of a 26 year old man on March 18, 2009, the Kokomo, Indiana Police Department was called into action. Kokomo Police Sergeant Tom Mygrant called A Child Is Missing to assist his agency’s search for the two who had gone missing from the 2900 block of North Delphos Street in Kokomo. After approximately 4,000 alert calls were placed in the surrounding areas, one of the calls from the public resulting from the alert calls provided a location of the two. “This system was very important,” said Sergeant Mygrant.

One of the more than 1,700 alert calls placed to the area surrounding where the boy had last been seen was received by the mother of a friend of the missing boy. She talked to her son, inquired about the whereabouts of his missing friend, and provided information to Police. That information led Indianapolis Metro to the boy approximately ½ mile from where he had last been seen.

Madison, Indiana (Jefferson County) Police Department - The missing boy “was located less than two hours after your service started calls,” Madison, Indiana Police Lieutenant Daniel Slygh said of the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. This came after Lieutenant Slygh activated the Alert Program to assist his agency’s search for a 15 year old boy who was missing from the 500 block of East 2nd Street in Madison on the morning of October 25, 2008. Approximately 20 calls from the public to Madison Police were generated from the nearly 4,400 alert calls placed by A Child Is Missing. One recipient of the alert call indicated they had seen the boy and another called his mother to give his whereabouts.

Indianapolis, Indiana (Marion County) Police Department - Detective Kevin Shue of the Indianapolis, Indiana Police Department called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program regarding an eight year old boy who had gone missing at approximately 8:45pm on Friday, September 12, 2008. More than 5,500 alert calls were placed to the area adjacent to the 3400 block of North Central Avenue in Indianapolis asking anyone with information to call Indianapolis Police. One call was generated to Police from a person who received the A Child Is Missing alert call and saw the child on a porch—recognizing him from the description in the alert call.

At approximately quarter past 8:00am on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 a nine year old boy went missing from the 1800 block of West Charles Street in Muncie, Indiana. After Muncie Police responded to the call for the missing boy, they contacted A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program. More than 4,000 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding where the boy was last seen—asking anyone with information to call Muncie Police. Six people did call Police leading to the safe recovery of the child “at approximately 10:25am on College Avenue just south of West Jackson Street” according to Police.

Story:

When a 75 year old man went missing in Bloomington, Indiana on the afternoon of Saturday, August 16, 2008, time was of the essence for the Bloomington Police Department. Officer Reynolds called the A Child Is Missing Alert Program to help in the search of the area surrounding the 4100 block of North Rosewood Drive in Bloomington where the missing man had last been seen. Three thousand alert telephone calls later, Bloomington Police had received sufficient information from members of the community to lead them to a wooded area approximately 1,000 yards north of the man’s residence.

The alert calls had been requested on May 27, 2008 seeking help from residents in the area of the 2300 block of Garden Park Drive in Fort Wayne. One of the calls to Police pinpointed the missing woman’s location and Fort Wayne Police were able to locate her safely.

Story:

Logansport, IN (Cass County) - The Logansport, Indiana Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert Program on November 2, 2007 in search of a missing six year old girl. The girl’s mother didn’t realize her daughter was missing until she went to her daycare facility to pick up her and her other children. After two hours of law enforcement searching and nearly 3,000 A Child Is Missing alert calls being launched to the community, the child was located by one of the more than 100 calls Logansport Police received. A teacher, who had earlier that day overheard a conversation about the child going to a friend’s house, received an alert call and was able to help police.

Peru, IN (Miami County) – On August 27, 2007 at 9:09 a.m., Miami County Central Dispatch contacted A Child Is Missing to assist in locating a white male fugitive. ACIM’s Technician launched 1,125 phone calls to his last known whereabouts, and numerous calls were received regarding his location. “We were able to track him, and he was captured several days later as a result of family providing information,” according to Detective Mike Rogers of Miami County Central Dispatch. Detective Rogers added that “We contacted news media immediately and, as a result of your (ACIM’s) services, they want to do a follow-up story focusing on your program and its capabilities.”

According to the Starke County Sheriff’s Office, the child was in the company of a friend and the friend’s mother. When a 25 year old woman ran off with her three year old niece in Bluffton, Indiana, Bluffton Police were immediately involved. Chief of Police Tammy Schaffer called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program to assist her agency’s search for the missing child and suspect. The woman had taken the girl from Capri Court in the late morning of May 24, 2007. After alert calls were placed, 20 calls to Police were generated. With a search underway for her and the child, and alert phone calls ringing all over town, the woman brought the child to the Police Department shortly after 2:00pm.

When a 71 year old man went missing from the 11000 block of North Marzane in Markle, Indiana on May 7, 2007, Wells County Detective Powell and Sergeant Bower used the A Child Is Missing Alert Program to help their search. More than 1,100 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the last know location of the man. A woman received the alert call and was overheard by her children saying one of the neighbors was missing. The children rode four wheelers around looking for the man and found him leaning against a tree in a field in the back of their house.

Middletown, IN (Hamilton County) – On March 16, 2007 a 17 year old boy went missing. The Middletown Police Department called A Child Is Missing to utilize the Alert Program. Upon taking the missing person’s information the ACIM Technician, utilizing satellite mapping, placed over 800 calls to the surrounding neighborhood. The Middletown PD received many calls, some containing information about the whereabouts of this person. “He was located . . . with a friend in the friends car,” stated Officer Justin Michael.

Lawrence, IN (Marion County) – On Friday, December 15, 2006, the City of Lawrence Police Department began the search for a 10-year-old boy who had gone missing from his home. Det. / Sgt. Mathew Miller called A Child Is Missing and relayed vital information to the Technician on call. Within minutes over seven hundred phone began ringing in area. Shortly after the calls went out, residents began calling the Lawrence Police Department with information about the child’s whereabouts. He was located a short while later. Det. Sgt. Miller stated “Child was located on a golf course approximately 1 mile form his house. Residents were calling telling us where he was. Thank you!!”

Story:

Peru, IN - On Oct 8, 2005, a two-year-old girl was found wandering around outside unsupervised in the city of Peru (Miami County), Indiana. The police brought the child to the stationhouse and Detective John Kilcreese of the Miami County Sheriff’s Department contacted A Child Is Missing. Detective Kilcreese reported a full description of the found child to be broadcast in the hope that a neighbor might know whom the child’s guardian might be. A Child is missing alerted 378 homes in the region immediately surrounding where the child was found. The Miami County SD received 4 calls from residents in the area, including the father of the child who had been sleeping, and did not know his two-year-old had left the house. As a result of the calls, the girl’s identity was revealed within moments of the calls being sent out. Detective Kilcreese was quoted as saying, “Thanks again, I’ve used the system three times now and it has been quite useful!”

Story:

Peru, IN - On August 18, 2005, an emotionally troubled 15-year-old boy ran away from home in Peru (Miami County), Indiana. After evaluating the situation, Linda Sutton of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a full description of the boy to be distributed via telephone in search of a recovery. A Child Is Missing placed 1054 alert calls over the area where the child was last seen. Miami County SO received 8 responses from residents, one of which provided the direction of travel (on foot) around the time last seen. As a result of the alert, he was returned home safely after being recovered from a friend’s residence.

Story:

Bourbon, IN - On August 3, 2005, two children (ages 9 and 7) were reported missing by their babysitter in Bourbon (Marshall County), Indiana. After evaluating the situation, Ward Byers on behalf of the Bourbon PD contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a full description to be distributed via telephone.A Child Is Missing placed 884 calls over the area where the children were last seen. 8 calls were received including a few that pointed out the route the children were traveling. They children were ultimately found and recovered unharmed in a swimming pool as a result of the alert calls.

Story:

Valparaiso, IN - On May 17, 2005, an 11-year-old boy was reported missing to the Valparaiso, Indiana Police – The mother had previously checked with all of the neighborhood children, but two hours had gone by with no sign of him. A ground search was launched with the Valpo PD and Sergeant Kostelnik advised that the A Child Is Missing Alert should be activated. A Child Is Missing placed 1950 calls over the areas where the missing boy was last seen and known to visit. Within moments after the calls went out, a resident called the police and advised that she had seen the child walking South on Fairlane… Police Units began moving to that area when a second telephone call came in reporting that he was on Illinois Street. Police picked him up and transported him back to his mother immediately.

Elkhart, IN - Elkhart Police Department- On April 11, 2005, a 4-year-old-girl went with her mother’s boyfriend to pick up a prescription at the local drugstore in Elkheart, Indiana. When he didn’t return after a few hours, the police were called, it was discovered that the man with the young girl was a registered sex offender and had other warrants out for his arrest. Detective Krystal Garcia of the Elkheart Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing and reported the situation, giving descriptions of both the child and adult. A Child Is Missing placed 2,520 calls over the area where the missing people were last seen and headed. One of the neighborhood residents spotted them walking at a gas station within a mile of where they were last seen. The missing child was promptly returned to her mother, and the suspect was arrested. Time from when the description was broadcast to the recovery of the child: 8 minutes. Detective Garcia was quoted as saying, “Thanks […] for your help! VERY HELPFUL!”

Knox, Star County, IN – Star County Sheriff Office - On February 8, 2005 16-year-old boy (mentally a 4-year old) in Knox, Indiana was reported missing by his parents. Officer Clinton Noram of the Star County Sheriff's Office apprised A Child Is Missing of the situation, and calls were placed. A Child Is Missing placed 886 calls over the area where the boy was last seen and numerous residents responded noting that he was seen walking on roadways in his neighborhood. He was ultimately recovered along the route he had been reportedly walking along approximately thirty minutes later.

Huntington, IN - Huntington Police Department - On November 30, 2004 an 11-year-old boy was reported missing after not arriving on the bus to school in Huntington, Indiana. He was considered to be a possible abduction risk by an estranged parent. Mary Ellen Shieber of the Huntington Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing Alert program requesting assistance. A Child Is Missing technician launched the 2926 alert phone calls to homes and businesses in the area where the child had last been seen. The Police Department received approximately 10 calls from residents. A resident, a prior babysitter, received the call and promptly called the station to let the police know that the boy was ok. The child had gone to the babysitter's after having missed the morning school bus. The missing child was recovered within ten minutes of the calls being placed.

Story:

Huntington, IN - Huntington Police Department - On April 6, 2004 a 71-year-old woman with dementia was reported missing from a Huntington, Indiana hotel. She was considered to be a possible danger to herself, and her Ability to communicate was sometimes difficult. Mary Ellen Schieber of the Huntington Police Department contacted A Child Is Missing Alert program requesting assistance. A Child Is Missing technician launched hundreds of alert phone calls to homes and businesses in the area where the woman had last been seen. The police department received several calls from residents, including one who had earlier seen a woman meeting the description walking along the road, and another who had recently seen her. The second responder didn't know that the subject was missing until she returned home and received the message on her answering machine. The responder in turn called the police and mentioned that she had seen a person fitting the missing woman's description. An officer checked the area and found the woman walking along the side of the road. The woman was reunited with her family within 90 minutes of the calls going out.
