Story:

Edgefield County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office “The notification by your office directly helped the ESCO with the effective effort and safe recovery of the missing man and brought forth volunteers from the community who were willing to assist in the search,” wrote Sergeant Gary Hitt after he activated A Child Is Missing Alert on Friday, April 12, 2013. The missing man was an 84 year old reported to be suffering from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. He was reported missing from his home by his family and ACIM placed nearly 500 telephone alert calls to the rural area surrounding the home. The Alert assisted deputies in locating the man safe about half a mile away a short time later.

Story:

Florence, South Carolina Police Department (Florence County) “Thank you for our assistance. A caller reported seeing the missing person near the Florence Flea Market earlier in the afternoon. A Florence County Deputy located the missing person at that location.” This is written by Sergeant Robinson. He activated A Child Is Missing Alert on Sunday, January 27, 2013 for a 50 year old man with schizophrenia that was missing from an assisted living facility. More than 1,000 telephone alert calls were sent to the area which assisted Police in locating the man safe.

Story:

Greer, South Carolina Police Department (Greenville County) “After being advised the alert went out we started receiving calls that narrowed our search area very quickly and a short time later the elderly male was located in good health.” This was written by Sergeant O’Shields after he activated A Child Is Missing Alert on December 11, 2012 to assist his agency in locating an 88 year old man with dementia. The man had last been seen near a Subway sandwich shop on a busy street and it had been a few hours since anyone had seen him. Tips from the alert calls assisted Police in locating the man over 3 miles away.

Story:

Cherokee County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office The afternoon of October 28, 2012, a 62 year old woman reported to suffer from congestive heart failure and seizures was reported missing from her home in Gaffney. Officer Peterson activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist. More than 1,000 telephone alert calls were sent to the area surrounding the woman’s home, asking anyone with information to contact Police. Tips received as a result of the alert assisted deputies in locating the woman safe a short distance away from her home.

Story:

Kershaw County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office Wednesday, June 6, 2012, Lieutenant Danny Templar called A Child Is Missing Alert. He was seeking assistance in locating a 75 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s reported missing from his home in Cassatt. The area where the man lives is a sparsely populated wooded area and the agency had set up a command post to effectively search. A Child Is Missing Alert sent nearly 500 telephone alert calls to residents nearby, giving them the man’s description and asking them to contact The Sheriff’s Office if they had any information. Upon activation, residents began coming to the command post to assist with the search and many of them were familiar with the roads in the rural area. The man was located safe about 25 minutes after the alert was placed. Lieutenant Templar wrote, “ Your service is and has been a tremendous help for our agency.”

Kershaw County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office The night of May 29, 2012, a 3 year old boy was reported missing from his home in Cassat and The Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office began a search. Captain Phillips activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist the agency and nearly 400 telephone alert calls were sent to the rural area surrounding the boy’s home. In response, many nearby residents volunteered to assist in the search of the wooded area, which helped deputies to locate the boy safe about an hour after the alert was placed. According to the follow-up report sent to ACIM, The Alert “worked very well.”

Georgetown County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office The afternoon of Friday, December 31, 2010, two toddlers aged two and three were reported missing from the small town of Hemingway. Sergeant Geno called A Child Is Missing to activate the Alert. The two children were believed to have wandered into the woods surrounding their home and Deputies wanted to find them quickly as there was also water nearby. More than 200 alert phone calls went out, asking anyone with information to contact Police. In this particular case, approximately 20 neighbors having received the call came out to search for the children. As a result, the children were located safe by some of the searchers, approximately 2.5 miles from where they had gone missing.

Cherokee County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office On February 8, 2010, an 83 year old woman suffering from dementia went missing from her home in Gaffney. The sun had set and the woman was only wearing a house coat when she went missing. Lieutenant Hill activated A Child is Missing and over 1,300 alert calls were placed around the woman’s home, asking anyone with information to call Police. A passer-by, who had received an alert call and had left home, saw the woman walking on the shoulder of the road and phoned Police. She was located safe, five miles from where she had gone missing.

Cayce, South Carolina (Lexington County) Police Department Approximately 35 calls from the public with information were generated by the A Child Is Missing alert calls placed on June 27, 2009 on behalf of the Cayce, South Carolina Police Department to help find a missing two year old boy. The boy had last been seen wearing a Mickey and Minnie Mouse diaper near the intersection of Pine Street and Julius Felder Street in Cayce at approximately 4:00am. Ultimately the boy was located safely by Police as a direct result of the alert calls placed by A Child Is Missing.

Colleton County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office When a 76 year old man went missing in Colleton County, South Carolina, Colleton Sheriff’s Sergeant Murdaugh activated A Child Is Missing to augment the search his agency had undertaken. Four wheelers, a helicopter, and deputies on foot were all engaged in search for the man. After the A Child Is Missing alert calls were placed, approximately 15-20 calls from the public with information were received by the Sheriff’s Office. One call in particular pointed deputies in the direction of the man, “they didn’t pinpoint his location, but they put him on foot in the area and he was found by the helicopter at the edge of a field,” said Colleton Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Ted Stanfield. This began on June 21, 2009 at approximately 5:00pm when the man went missing from the 700 block of Wisteria Road in Green Pond, South Carolina and concluded in the wooded area in which the man was found at 12:00pm the next day.

Cherokee County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office A 66 year old woman in need of medical attention went missing from the 400 block of Lockhart Lane in Gaffney, South Carolina on Sunday morning May 31, 2009. Lieutenant Turner of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office called A Child Is Missing and activated the Alert Program to assist the Sheriff’s Office search. After more than 2,800 alert calls were placed to the area surrounding the Lockhart Lane location, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received information from the public that led to the safe recovery of the woman on Providence Creek Road in Gaffney approximately one mile from where she had last been seen. “Your program is a valuable tool,” said a Sheriff’s Office official, “we received valuable information and help that we would not have received without your help.”

Anderson County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office When a 72 year old man in need of medical attention went missing in Anderson, South Carolina in the late afternoon on May 19, 2009, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office quickly became involved. A part of their search included activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program which resulted in more than 1,300 alert calls being sent to the area surrounding the 100 block of Greentree Road in Anderson where the man had last been seen. Though the alert calls resulted in only one call from the public to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office with information, that call provided all the detail that was needed. Deputies were able to then find the man safe at a dead end on Old Denver Road approximately two miles from the Greentree Road location.

North Myrtle Beach, SC (Horry County) - Detective Owen Lynam of the North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Police Department said of the missing 11 year old boy for which Police had been searching: “[the] missing child was located approximately three miles from his residence on the site of a former golf course. A neighbor of the child contacted our agency when she located the child… neighbor had been contacted by [A Child Is Missing].” The boy had gone missing on the night of February 5, 2008 and was located the next day after more than 4,000 alert phone calls had been placed.

Greeneville, SC (Greeneville County) -On January 29, 2008 Greeneville County, South Carolina Sheriff’s Office Communication Supervisor Marie Simkins activated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program regarding a missing 84 year old man who had gone missing. Multiple waves of alert calls were launched—more than 11,000 calls in all. Ultimately approximately 25 calls from alert citizens were received by the Greeneville County Sheriff’s Office. Two of those calls specifically located the man for Deputies.

Missing Child - Recovered: Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Story:

Latta, SC (Dillon County) – On Tuesday, July 10, 2007, while home for lunch, a softball coach in South Carolina received an alert call regarding a missing girl from A Child Is Missing. Upon returning to softball practice after lunch, he mentioned the alert call to his team. As the coach recalled the alert message, one of his players mentioned seeing the girl walking on a back road. This prompted the coach to call Latta, South Carolina Police, who had activated the Alert Program less than two hours earlier. When officers responded they located the girl unharmed and returned her safely to her family. Latta Police Corporal Derrick Cartwright activated the Alert Program and said approximately 25-40 calls were received by police from those who received the alert message. Latta Police had never used the A Child Is Missing Alert Program before and Corporal Cartwright said, “we were truly impressed by this system.”

Simpsonville, SC (Greenville County) – In Greenville County, South Carolina at 6:20 PM on May 24, 2007 a 12 year old boy went missing. The Simpsonville Police Department initiated the A Child Is Missing Alert Program. 1200 calls were placed in the neighborhood. One resident called the Police and stated they saw the child walking down the street. He was located at 9 PM near the location where he was spotted.

North Augusta, SC (Edgefield County) – On March 3, 2007, very early in the morning, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office contacted A Child Is Missing for assistance with a missing 9-year-old boy. The ACIM Technician obtained vital information from Lt. Karen Jaggers and within minutes 999 phones in the neighborhood began ringing. Lt. Jaggers stated, “A resident who had received the message was outside and saw the child and alerted police. The child was located in the woods … near his home.”

Story:

Anderson County, SC – On Sunday, October 1, 2006, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office began a search for a 12 year-old girl who had gone missing from her home — a search that ended with a response to one of the hundreds of automated phone calls that had been placed to the area adjacent to his home by the A Child Is Missing alert program. Upon taking the report, Officer Smith called the toll free number for the A Child Is Missing alert program, provided key information to the technician, and, shortly after, the region where she was last seen area was ringing with calls requesting those in the area to check their yards and complexes for the missing preteen. Police received numerous calls from nearby residents that had noticed her in the front yard of a house about a mile from where she’d been last seen. The recovered girl was reunited with her parents safe and sound within hours of her being reported missing.

Simpsonville, SC - On May 5, 2006, a 12-year old boy went missing from his residence in Simpsonville (Greenville County) SC. Corporal Ernie Byrd of the Simpsonville PD contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a complete description of the missing boy to be used as part of the neighborhood notification alert. A Child Is Missing notified approximately 800 residences and businesses in the area. One of the call recipients had been visited by the child earlier, and contacted the police immediately, directing them to the child’s location. The missing boy was recovered safe and sound within 10 minutes after ACIM started the calls

Story:

Anderson County, SC – On July 29, 2005, a 9-year old boy was reported missing in Star (Anderson County), South Carolina. After evaluating the situation, Deputy Sherry Maudlin of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office contacted A Child Is Missing and reported a full description to be distributed via telephone. A Child Is Missing placed 941 alert calls over the area where the child was last seen. Anderson County Sheriff’s Office received numerous responses from residents, one of whom discovered the boy on her back porch. As a result of the alert, he was returned home approximately 90 minutes after the alert calls were placed.
