Story:

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey Police Department (Bergen County) Sunday, July 27, 2014, an 80 year old suffering from Alzheimer’s told his wife he wanted to ‘Go Home’ and walked out of his house. Woodcliff Lake Police responded and Detective Malloy activated A Child Is Missing Alert to aid in the search for the man. More than 1,000 telephone alert calls were sent to the area with the man’s description asking anyone that might see him to contact Police. A resident that lived about a half mile away received the alert, checked her property and found him in her backyard, bringing the search to an end.

Perth Amboy, New Jersey Police Department (Middlesex County) Tuesday, July 8, 2014, Detective Cabrera called A Child Is Missing to activate The Alert. A 17 year old girl had been missing during the overnight hours. Concern for her safety was growing as she was reported to be prone to seizures. Upon activation of the alert, more than 1,500 telephone alert calls were sent to the area which garnered 4 calls from the public. These calls assisted Police in locating the girl safe that afternoon about 1 mile away.

Story:

Lebanon Township, New Jersey Police Department (Hunterdon County) On Friday, April 18, 2014, a 71 year old woman suffering from Alzheimer’s walked away from her residence at approximately 8 p.m. The missing woman had wandered off before but had previously been found quickly and this was the longest time with no sight of her. More than 50 police and emergency service members searched throughout the night with the assistance of K-9 officers and a helicopter to search for the missing woman. The next morning, Detective Sergeant Kristen Larsen activated A Child Is Missing Alert Program and over 790 telephone alert calls were sent to the area surrounding the 500 block of Kubin Court, where she was last seen. Residents who received the alert calls were asked to check their properties for the missing woman because it was thought she may have sought shelter to keep warm somewhere nearby after becoming disoriented. According to the case follow-up received from Detective Sergeant Larsen, “The ACIM calls went out at 0730 hours on 4/19/2014. A neighbor received the call and went out to check the wooded area across the street. She located the missing woman, who was taken by ambulance to Hunterdon Medical Center, where she received medical treatment. This program helped locate the missing 71-year-old woman in an area off of Hickory Run Road, about a half mile from her residence.”

Ridgefield, New Jersey (Bergen County) Police Department On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, a 13 year old girl was reported missing by her mother in Ridgefield. She had last been seen earlier that morning prior to her mother leaving for work. The mother normally leaves the house at 6 AM and at 7 AM makes a “Wake-Up call” for her daughter to get ready for school. However, on this day the school notified the mother that her daughter was absent. Sergeant Russ Christiana activated A Child Is Missing Alert to augment his agency’s search and more than 11,000 telephone alert calls were sent throughout the community with the girl’s general description and name; in the hopes that someone from the area may have information on her whereabouts. Over the next hour and a half, two more rounds of alert calls were placed, encompassing approximately 2.5 square miles. Finally, the exhaustive search ended at approximately 1:10 pm when the girl was located unharmed in a Brooklyn New York Subway Station near 330 Jay Street, approximately 16 miles from the last seen location. Per case follow-up received, “I would like to thank your organization for assisting this Agency on this missing child case!” wrote Detective Joseph Malanga of the Ridgefield Police regarding the assistance provided by A Child Is Missing (ACIM).

According to the follow-up report, “A caller who received the message indicated that they saw the missing child in Rahway. She was soon recovered in the area the caller provided.” The girl was found unharmed in a complex about 1 mile away from her home.

Over 2,500 telephone alert calls were sent to the area, asking anyone with information on the girl’s whereabouts to contact Police. Approximately one half hour after the alert was sent, the girl returned home stating that her friends had told her of the telephone alert calls and that she had become scared and chose to return home on her own. The alert brought a quick resolution, saving law enforcement time and resources.

Washington Township, New Jersey (Gloucester County) Police Department The evening of Tuesday, February 21, 2012, a 12 year old girl was reported from her home and Officer Gereaghty was leading the search. The girl had last been seen at her residence earlier in the evening wearing pajamas with no shoes and concern for her safety was growing. A Child Is Missing was activated to assist and nearly 1,400 telephone alert calls were sent to the area surrounding the girl’s home, asking residents to be on the lookout and to contact the Police if they had any information on her whereabouts. Numerous residents came outside to check around their property after they received the alert call. The home where the child was at noticed all of the searchers and it was through communication with the searchers that they realized the missing girl was at their home. Total time from activation to safe recovery was under 45 minutes, preserving law enforcement time and resources.

His daughter stated that the man had wandered off before but had been found quickly and it was past four hours with no sign of him. She also stated that he could cover good distances in a short amount of time. Detective Barrett activated A Child Is Missing and over 1,500 telephone alert calls were sent surrounding the man’s home. According to the case follow-up received from the Detective, “Your services were very helpful to the return of the missing man. We received calls with people who saw him due to your phone calls.” The missing man was finally located the next day, 50 miles away.

The boy had not shown up for school and his family was very concerned for his safety. More than 3,000 telephone alert calls were sent to the area where the boy was last seen. According to the follow-up from Detective Diaz, “Phone calls helped in the quick recovery of the missing boy.” Ultimately, the boy was located approximately 2 miles away in just a half hour after activation of the Alert. This was the second safe assisted recovery for the agency in a two day period.

He had gone missing previously and wasn’t found for 6 months, so Police wanted to find him quickly. Dispatcher Tamburelli activated A Child Is Missing Alert on behalf of Detective Feehan and more than 1,000 telephone alert calls were sent to the area surrounding the man’s home. When the initial callout did not produce sufficient information to locate the man, a second callout was requested and an additional 2,000 calls were sent, covering the lower half of the island city of Brigantine. The morning of Sunday, November 6th, a caller reported that they had located the missing man near his residence. The man returned home on his own, and the long search was brought to an end.

On Monday, July 25, 2011, after 24 hours missing, the search for a 66 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s and Diabetes was finally brought to a close. Dispatcher Mike contacted ACIM the night of Monday, July 24th to report the man missing. The first round of calls was placed. The next afternoon when the man had still not been located, Detective Barney initiated a second batch of calls. A caller reported a sighting of the man some distance away from the calling area. A third batch of calls was sent to that particular area. The man was finally located 60 miles away from his home in Clementon. “Your organization was instrumental in finding our victim.” wrote Lt Thomas Brennan.

New Jersey State Police, New Jersey Tuesday, June 14, 2011, an elderly man suffering from dementia was reported missing from his home in Hampton, NJ. Trooper Pavelchak called A Child Is Missing Alert at 2:24pm and the man was located at 2:45pm as a direct result of telephone alert calls sent to the area. The alert calls gave the man’s description and asked anyone with information to contact The New Jersey State Police. Residents in the town of Glen Gardner, approximately 2 miles away from the man’s home noticed the gentleman sitting in an intersection and flagged down local Police, who in turn notified the State Police. The man was reunited with his family, safe.

West Orange, New Jersey (Essex County) Police Department The morning of Sunday, June 5, 2011 a 91 year old man suffering from Alzheimer’s was reported missing from his assisted living facility in West Orange. It was estimated that the man had been missing for five hours before Police were notified so no one knew how far the man could have gone. Dispatcher Babinski activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency and nearly 1,000 telephone alert calls were placed to residents and businesses surrounding the facility, giving the man’s description and asking anyone with information to call Police. In response, the department received several calls with information that enabled them to narrow down the search area. They ultimately located the man safe, 15 miles away in Jersey City.

They had last been seen at 10:30 that morning walking to a local park. Officer Iberer activated A Child Is Missing Alert and nearly 1,800 alert calls were quickly placed to the area surrounding the location the girls were last seen. As a result of those alert calls, Montclair Police received 15 calls from the public with information. That information enabled Police to locate the girls safe five miles away in Wayne, NJ.

Gibbsboro, New Jersey (Camden County) Police Department At 12:30am on Friday, February 4, 2011, Officer Girgenti called A Child Is Missing requesting activation of the Alert for a 10 year old boy missing for over four hours. Despite the late hour, a large calling radius was determined a necessity due to freezing temperatures and over 1,800 alert calls were placed surrounding the boy’s home, asking anyone with any information to contact Police. According to the Gibbsboro Police Department, several calls came in as concerned residents volunteered to assist the department. When daylight came, the boy had still not been located and the department called back to expand the calling radius. One of those calls went to the boy’s teacher who went out to assist in searching for the boy. She found the boy sleeping in a field approximately 2 miles from his home at 7:30am.

He had last been seen at a local Wal-Mart, and initial searches of the area had turned up no sign of him. Corporal Greer contacted A Child Is Missing, the first time his agency had done so, and 2,000 telephones rang with alert calls, giving the boy’s basic description and asking anyone who had information on his whereabouts to call Police. Within 10 minutes of the alert calls going out, a woman called Police stating the boy was at her home playing with her children approximately 2 miles from the Wal-Mart. Total time from activation to safe recovery was under 15 minutes, thus preserving law enforcement time and resources.

Bloomfield, New Jersey (Essex County) Police Department Saturday, June 5, 2010, Detective Menzel activated A Child Is Missing Alert to assist his agency in a search for a missing 12 year old boy. The boy had gone missing after attending a school dance, and of particular concern was that the school had the boy checked off as being picked up by an adult but no name or information had been recorded about the adult. More than 7,000 alert calls were launched around three addresses, including the school where the dance was being held, the boy’s residence, and the school the boy attends. In response, Police received several calls from the community with information. One call came from a woman a few houses down from where the boy was attending a sleepover. Upon receiving the alert call, she contacted the neighbor hosting the sleepover, who then contacted Police, and the boy was returned home safe.
