The mother assumed that he was just blowing off steam, and would be back shortly. After two hours went by, she sent the boy's older sister to retrieve him. When she was unable to do so, the mother waited for a few more hours for him to come home before calling the East Lansing Police when he didn't return for dinner. East Lansing Police arrived and searched the house and yard to ensure the missing boy wasn't hiding out nearby. After they had determined he wasn't in the house, they obtained a list of his friends in the neighborhood, and attempted to make contact at those residences. None of his known friends had seen him that day. Investigating further, the police distributed photographs of the boy amongst area patrol units searching for him. Dispatch Officer Williams contacted A Child Is Missing to assist in the location and recovery of the boy, and all homes within a half-mile radius received an alert call with his description and last known location. When he hadn't been found inside that radius, it was expanded to approximately a mile and a half around where he was last seen. While ELPD units, overtime units, LPD units, MSU PD, MTPD units and other surrounding police departments where searching for the missing child, he was located by a motorist. The motorist had been advised of the child's situation through the A Child Is Missing Program. He transported the child back to the boy's residence and advised ELPD approximately four hours after he had been reported missing. After he was returned safely home, the boy's explanation was that he had walked to the park, gotten lost, and couldn't find his way back on his own.
